How does music express or create collective cultural identity? Participants in the Alchemy Project – young musicians and music producers from Lewisham schools who meet regularly at Goldsmiths – based their term’s activities around our exhibition If UR Reading This It’s 2 Late: Vol. 1. Their responses to the ways in which artist Tony Cokes uses music in his films by artists such as NWA, Public Enemy, Skream and Drake to accompany found texts drawn from popular culture and theory, formed the basis for their own pieces. The project was celebrated with live performances across the building on Tuesday 14 January 2020.

ABOUT ALCHEMY

Alchemy is a professional creative music lab for 14-18 year olds from local schools who meet every Saturday in the Goldsmiths University music department, collaborating to create original music and develop performance, composition and production skills. They work with professional and student musicians and producers, with additional support from youth work students from the University’s Social, Therapeutic and Community Studies (STaCS) department.
