A Particular Reality
A Particular Reality (APR) is an inter-institutional collective formed by students, alumni and educators from the Fine Art departments at Goldsmiths University, Kingston School of Art, Manchester Metropolitan University and Middlesex University. With a commitment to building creative learning environments upon the values of equity, care and collaboration; APR addresses art, learning and anti-racism, within and beyond practice-based education.
APR are committed to providing a non-hierarchical space to support marginalised students and staff and cultivate creative expression. They intend to forge connections across creative disciplines amongst students, educators and makers; elevating individuals who identify with feeling isolated in respect of their cultural identity and lived experience. They call for institutions to serve people’s differences better, and strive for those who make up the institution to feel more connected to a network of practitioners, creatives and collaborators.
“A black visual art is an innovative expression of a particular reality – a reality set in the framework of specific cultural and historic forces. These are: cultural domination by Western Eurocentrism and marginality to it; the experience of exploitation, appropriation, slavery, inequality and racism; and the long and abominable history of colonialism. A black art emerges from this framework and is vitalised by these forces.” – Gavin Jantjes, 1986
In the past year, APR had a busy time holding space for students, alumni and educators to explore the intersections of art, social justice and care. Their weekly Common Room offered a relaxed space with food and materials to hold conversations. Their Points of Connection event welcomed art students and alumni from Reading and Wolverhampton Universities for a day of making, sharing practice and experiences. They produced a 3 day exhibition and event series called Things Within Reach to launch newly produced resources and publications on anti-racism in arts education, reflecting on the learnings with students, alumni, artists and teachers. Moving forward APR will be led by a new team with Michelle Williams Gamaker and recent BA Art graduates Connie Solari and Amira Dabboussi – exciting year ahead!
