Sophie Seita: plastic lip slot machine
Seita’s performance plastic lip slot machine will respond to the ‘drawing-writing’ or graphic poetry of Belgian artist Sophie Podolski, currently on show at Goldsmiths CCA, and explore a shared interest in both artists’ practices of new forms of embodying text or ‘reading’ the illegible.
The performance will emerge from Seita’s ongoing practice of ‘touching language’ through performance, performative objects, sound, scores, somatic workshops, and textiles, and an ongoing preoccupation with other forms of sense making and sensual encounter with materials. It will occur against the backdrop of Seita’s series of textile works titled and and and also, which depict experimental graphic scores for imagined voices and abstract bodies, and will feature other props for making language malleable, or out of—as Podolski says—‘some plastic material’.

BIOGRAPHY
For about a decade, Sophie Seita has worked with language as a sensuous, sculptural, and sonic material, translated and moulded into live performances, objects, publications, sound pieces, drawings, textiles, and somatic workshops. Choreographed by language, their work often explores the sensorial pleasure of wild forms, new grammars of relationality and embodiment, and the operations of power that reside within the words, materials, and mediums we grapple with. Often working collaboratively, she’s currently developing a long-term project on eco-literacy with Youngsook Choi, and a performance ritual for and with queer ancestors and water alongside Victoria Perrie, Jehan Roberson, Naomi Woo; and most recently, with Bhanu Kapil, she improvised a score around and about the perimeter, the pericardium, performing duration and an intimate encounter with a known structure at Goethe Institute London. Seita teaches in the Art Department at Goldsmiths, and recently held residencies at Akademie der Künste (Berlin), Studio Voltaire (London), Britten Pears Arts (Snape Maltings), and Brown University (Providence, Rhode Island). Their latest book is Lessons of Decal (87 Press, 2023).
