Noted Frampton scholar Bruce Jenkins will speak about the relationship of Frampton’s photographic work to his overall artistic practice. Following the lecture, Jenkins will be joined for an in conversation event with Lisa Zaher.

BIOGRAPHIES

Bruce Jenkins is Professor of Film, Video, New Media and Animation at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Prior to coming to SAIC, he was the Stanley Cavell Curator at the Harvard Film Archive, where he directed a film archive and a year-round cinematheque program. Dr. Jenkins served as Curator of Film and Video from 1985 to 1999 at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. His first position in the field was as Film Programmer at Media Study/Buffalo, where he directed screening series, a visiting artist series, and exhibitions from 1979 to 1985. He earned a BA from New York University and received his Ph.D. in film studies from Northwestern University.

Jenkins’s curatorial work was initiated with small-scale shows at Media Study as well as collaboration on “Hollis Frampton: Recollections/Recreations” at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. At the Walker he curated several gallery exhibitions, including “Viewpoints: Mary Lucier and Paul Kos,” “Dennis Hopper: From Method to Madness,” and “Chris Marker/William Klein: Silent Movie/Moving Pictures”; he was co-curator of “Chantal Akerman: Bordering on Fiction” and “2000 BC: The Bruce Conner Story, Part Two.” At Harvard, he curated “Mediations: Grahame Weinbren and Peter Ungerleider” and collaborated with the Fogg Art Museum on “Romancing the Wreck.”

Dr. Jenkins has written for numerous exhibition catalogues for museums, and his essays have appeared in such publications as Artforum, October, Mousse and Millennium Film Journal. He has taught at the State University of New York at Buffalo, the University of Minnesota, Macalester College, Harvard University, and the University of Cincinnati. His books include Gordon Matta-Clark: Conical Intersect (Afterall) and the forthcoming second volume of the catalogue raisonné for the films of Andy Warhol (Whitney Museum and Yale University Press).

Lisa Zaher is Assistant Professor, Adjunct at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her research and teaching focuses on modern and contemporary art history with an emphasis on photographic media, moving-image arts and digital media practices. Zaher received her Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Chicago in 2013, and an M.A. from the Courtauld Institute of Art. Her book manuscript, Hollis Frampton: By Mind and Hand, which situates Frampton’s works and theoretical writings within the histories of fine art, photography, film and computational media, underscores the historiographical ambitions of Frampton’s practice through his development of a theory of embodied technological images. Additional works in progress include an edited collection of writings by and about the American multi-media artist, Patrick Clancy, and an edited collection, with Christine Mehring, on the German Fluxus artist, Wolf Vostell. She is a lead researcher on the project The Sites of the Virtual, organized by the University of Paris III, the University of Girona and the University of Chicago. Her writing has appeared in the Oxford Art Journal, Rethinking Marxism, Open Set, and Shifter.
