Exhibition Opening: Sat 27 Apr, 6pm–9pm
Performance at 7pm

Adam Christensen presented a new work that draws on the legacy of disco culture in 70s New York, specifically its forms of sociality, free and independent distribution of music, and our nostalgic and melancholic reconstruction of it in the present. He transformed the Daskalopoulos Gallery, CCA’s distinctive tank exhibition space, through a combination of modular sculptures and fabric pieces that will frame his performances. Christensen’s practice stages a ‘blurring of reality and fiction through moments of extreme performativity’. Through intimate lyrical performances of songs, and spoken recitations of anecdotes, he transports audiences into a private world of heartbreak and loss, at once tragi-comic, moving and elevating.

Performances by Christensen took place on the opening evening (Sat 27 Apr) at 7pm; Sat 4 May, 5pm; Thurs 16 May, 7pm; Sun 26 May, 4pm. They included various collaborators.

BIOGRAPHY
Adam Christensen (UK, 1979) is a London-based artist who makes performance, video, fabric and text works, and performs with the music project Ectopia, which was Wysing Arts Centre’s band-in-residence in 2016. He has previously performed and presented work at Overgaden Institute for Contemporary Art, Copenhagen, Baltic Triennial as well as Almanac, David Roberts Art Foundation, Southard Reid, London, Institute of Contemporary Arts and Hollybush Gardens in London.

Episodes is an ongoing series of solo presentations that cuts through the main programming at Goldsmiths CCA and provides a counterpoint to the larger-scale exhibitions. Spanning installations, screenings, discursive events and new commissions, the focus of this programme is to provide an experimental platform for emergent practices. The series kicked-off with Oisín Byrne’s GLUE (14 Dec 2018–3 Feb 2019), and continued in 2019 with presentations by Adam Christensen (27 April – 27 May 2019), Corey Hayman (17 July – 11 Aug 2019) and Roland Carline (16 Nov 2019 – 12 Jan 2020). Episodes is supported by the Oak Foundation.
