The Judges III is the third in a series of sculptural installations triggered by her fascination with rock formations photographed on a visit to Melbourne, Australia in 2010. This set of massive, brooding stone outcrops suggested to her the facial characteristics of watchful judges, observing human activity from their place in the rock.

Combining a wide range of natural, man made and crafted materials to create a complex web of associations, Mackie is interested in the potential of materials – what they can be made to do – and also in the connections between objects and how meaning can emerge from placing things together in different ways.

The Judges II (2011) was included in Christina Mackie’s solo exhibition Material Reality at Goldsmiths CCA, 30 January – 19 April 2026
