TALK: Eunjo Lee in conversation with Zaiba Jabbar
A conversation between artist Eunjo Lee, and curator Zaiba Jabbar, exploring Eunjo’s latest work Before the Shadow Taught The Sun at Goldsmiths CCA, 21 Mar-04 May 2025. They discuss the potentiality of digital media for world building and narrativising pressing contemporary issues such as our relationship to the natural world, and broader universal themes of cycles of destruction and rebirth. Together they explore Lee’s striking use of aspects of world mythologies to create powerfully symbolic stories that bridge science fiction and fantasy.
BIOGRAPHIES
Eunjo Lee (b.1996, South Korea) is an artist and filmmaker based in London and Seoul. She recently graduated in MFA Fine Art from the Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford, winning the Mansfield-Ruddock Art Prize 2024. In 2023, she was awarded the Warden’s Prize from Goldsmiths University for her BA in Fine Art and History of Art. Her recent film, ‘Lullaby O’ The Ruin’ has been chosen for the final selection to be screened at NeMaf, the Seoul International ALT Cinema & Media Festival 2024. Eunjo previously created 3D visuals for the Techno-Tantrik Embodiment Project ‘Your Rage Is Sacred’ at Goldsmiths and FormaHQ in collaboration with artist Clémentine Bedos (2023), produced Paris Paloma’s ‘Last Woman on Earth’ lyric video (2024), showcased her video art in various screenings including Modern Art Oxford (2024), and participated in several group exhibitions. She has prior experience as a filmmaker in Seoul, working on projects for the National IT Industry Promotion Agency and the Seoul Foundation for Arts between 2020 and 2021, including K-Arts ON-Road, ICT Cultural Lab, and the Seoul Performing Arts Project. Lee exhibited at Niru Ratnam Gallery in January 2025.
Zaiba Jabbar is an award-winning director, moving image artist, commissioner, independent curator and Founder of HERVISIONS. She’s interested in the democratisation and accessibility by how we experience art outside the white cube. Her curatorial project HERVISIONS is an investigation into how people in the margins are using technology to create art outside of traditional formats, making space for themselves through the experience of expanded moving image. She is a leader in augmented reality and digital art exhibitions online and offline working with partners and institutes that include Tate Modern, LUX, bitforms, FURTHERFIELD, Saatchi Gallery, Instagram, Snapchat, The Photographers Gallery, BFI, The London College of Fashion, William Morris Gallery, Waltham Forest Borough and Google Arts and Culture. Zaiba was curator in residence at LUX in (2018) and is Board Member of Abandon Normal Devices and Associate Lecturer at Camberwell College of Art on the MA Computational arts course.
