Build them fine gardens is a still image from the artist’s film A proposal for a parakeet’s garden, which was exhibited as part of Testament (21 Jan–03 Apr 2022). The show gathered together artists’ proposals responding to monuments in the UK. Faramawy’s film proposes a garden for the vivid green parakeet, sometimes called a feral threat, as a cipher for anxieties over migration and in solidarity with refugees arriving in England.
The edition is an extension of Faramawy’s film By earth, sea and air we came (2021), a work intertwining the lives of flowers, parakeets and sailors around the River Lea that flows through the periphery of east London, drawing on history, biology, geography and mythology to think through experiences of migration and the relationship the artist, as a migrant and a person of colour, has to ideas of land and of place.
