Chaos, Sorting, Chaos, Sorting; Talk with Kyla McDonald
Join us for an exploration of Galli’s work by art historian and curator Kyla McDonald, whose research has explored Galli’s relationship to the 1970s art scene of Berlin, position within the debates around neo-expressionism and painting as a medium, mid-career outlier status, and reassessment of her work in the past decade. McDonald will respond to the exhibition, share her research, and expand upon it in conversation with CCA’s Senior Curator Natasha Hoare. The event will also offer the opportunity to view the exhibition.
7pm – Exhibition opens for viewing
7:30pm – Talk begins
BIOGRAPHY
Kyla McDonald is a curator and art historian based in Berlin. Her research encompasses enquiries into overlooked narratives in art history, artist-women, intergenerational dialogue, and the practice of queer, feminist, and de-colonial methodologies. Her doctoral thesis, completed in 2023, explored the notion of “rediscovery,” producing a timely study on the rise of exhibitions focused on the previously overlooked artists Hilma af Klint, Lee Lozano, and Betye Saar. She has held curatorial roles at Bonner Kunstverein; Glasgow Sculpture Studios; Tate Modern, London; and Tate Liverpool where she curated numerous exhibitions and projects with artists such as Hayley Tompkins, Liz Magor, Zofia Kulik, Haegue Yang, Tino Sehgal, Anthea Hamilton, Philippe Parreno, and Omar Fast, among others. In 2018, she curated a major retrospective of Niki de Saint Phalle for Beaux-Arts Mons, Belgium. Her writing has appeared in Flash Art, Spike International, Kaleidoscope, and several exhibition catalogues and artist monographs.
